Chapter 11

Jules answered her phone on the first ring, darting into a quiet area of the airport in order to hear the voice clearly from the other end of the line.

Mia listened but only caught the last line of the call.

“Thanks for everything. I really appreciate your help with this. We’ll change the flight now.

“I’ll let you know how it goes, bye now.”

She had no choice but to let Mia know about J.P. now, since he had been a pivotal part of every aspect of this trip so far, except Istanbul.

“Mia, I have a company that does a lot of work for me. J.P. has been of service to my mother and his father to my grandmother. It is extremely important that his services are kept confidential. I’m only telling you because you have likely figured it out already. I’m asking that you not to expose the fact I use him to anyone – ever.”

Mia assured her that she would comply. She did know there was some kind of agency behind Jules, but she couldn’t quite figure out what they did exactly. She had a feeling she wouldn’t be privy to that, but also knew some things were better left unsaid. When she heard ‘J.P.’, she figured they were the company that got her passport done in record time. Paul must have worked for him too and Samir in Iraq as well. She wondered aloud what news he had just given on the phone call.

“His contacts in Ireland said it would be a waste of time to go there. The travelers are scattered as never before because of government interventions. He is quite sure, however that Lizzy Brady had been there but then following a couple of years, she left for England. She apparently found out that her grandmother was working the tourists at Covent Gardens. J.P. said it seemed the best place to look. So guess what? Change of plans. We’re going to England!”

“Is he going to look there, too?”

“No. He seemed to think it would be best for us to go because it was good intell, as he put it.

“I am not really up on these things, so I’m just going on his advice. And he said to go. Are you okay with the change Mia? You look concerned.”

Mia leaned back on her heels, tapping the toes of her boots together for some time before answering. “Yeah, I’m okay, but what color do you think England is?”

Knowing where she was coming from, Jules answered simply, “I guess we’ll have to look out the plane window to see.” She nudged her along with her shoulder, appreciating that she didn’t probe further about J.P. and his company’s functions.

As they approached the ticket counter Jules swayed suddenly, having to hold on to Mia’s arm to catch her balance.

“I’m so dizzy. I feel I’m going to faint,” she continued to hold on tightly.

“Jules, let’s not go to the counter right this minute. You have to go sit down right away.”

She led her to the closest set of chairs, forcing her to lie down on both their back packs.
